VINTAGE MEXICAN STERLING SILVER & TURQUOISE 2 SIDED PENDANT ~ TAXCO ~ mkd. “APA”

Description

This is an attractive sterling silver and turquoise pendant hand made in Taxco, Mexico, the country’s world famous silver center.
The pendant is approximately 2” in diameter and comes with a 15” chain.
The convex body of the pendant is silver covered with turquoise aggregate which is decorated with silver, brass and copper inlay on both sides, each with a different design.
We don’t know exactly when this pendant was created but we think the 1940’s – 50’s.
The pendant has the silversmith’s mark on the loop (for want of a better word) at the top along with other information.  It is imperfectly struck but most of it can be read.  The first mark encountered is the bell/eagle mark containing the number “3”.  This confirms that the piece is sterling silver and made in Taxco.  Beneath this is stamped TAXCO MEX over the letters “APA” which stands for A. P. Alverez.  This silversmith may be found listed in “The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks” (Billie Hougart 2001).  This is a handsome vintage piece in good + original condition with no repairs.
