    Description

This is fully hallmarked, handmade “Árbol de la Vida” (Tree Of Life) Sterling Silver Chain Necklace from the renown Mexican silver atelier, Citlali Joyas (Guadalajara). Designed by Francisco Sánchez Sahagún. Stamped: CITLALI, 925, MEXICO GA10 (pendant); 925 (chain). Measurements: chain length – 40 cm/ 15.75”; pendant size – 4.9 х 1.7 cm; weight – 6.5 g.
Francisco Sánchez Sahagún, founder and owner of Citlali, first created this design in 1975. Citlali is still producing it (SKU 124D) though it comes with a leather cord and with slightly different engraving. “Árbol de la Vida” is an ornamental open-work silver diptych with lots of pattern details, characters, and some engravings which are said to strengthen the protective power of the pendant as an amulet. It is something more than just an archetype imagery of a mythological tree – it is rather a comprehensive illustration to the gnostic philosophical doctrine connecting Heaven, Earth, the Underworld, and all forms of creation. Astonishing piece of work inspired by the myths, beliefs, and arts of the most well-known Mesoamerican cultures.
    CONNOISSEUR’S TIP –
Citlali (Joyas) is a family workshop founded in 1968 in Guadalajara by Francisco Sánchez Sahagún, a silver craftsman who followed in his father’s footsteps. The workshop name, Citlali, is a Nahuatl word meaning a “star”. Sahagún chose it in order to stress his personal devotion to the national indigenous cultures and crafts, and to the glorious traditions of craftsmanship of the Mexican Silver Renaissance. Citlali survived the silver jewelry crisis, and proved that contemporary Mexican jewelry art can be as original and artistically aesthetic as the works of 1930-1950’s. Today, Sahagún’s daughter, Rosana Sánchez, continues family business. Citlali creates new designs, sells silver jewelry worldwide, participates in international jewelry and fashion events, and wins prestigious awards for design.
