    Description

    ABOUT FILIGREE:
Filigree jewelry in Oaxaca continues to be one of the most
    t
raditional art forms there, that was brought in by the
    Spaniards
with the Moor's historical influence in jewelry design.
.Filigree is a technical & mathematical art form that not all artists have mastered & it takes repetition, patience & years put in to do it right & cannot be done in the matter of hours, but rather sometimes taking days,or even month's,depending on how elaborate the piece is,as well as how fine the wire that the artist is working with.
There are many steps to mastering filigree work, from pulling the wire to the finest it can go without losing the metal's integrity,to then sawing(Serration) into the metal to give it's texture (See filigree wire in pictures) to then creating tiny circular forms that have to be mathematically correct with each curve of the wire,to doing a 'diamond' cut technique to the metal for a tad of sparkle when the light/sun hits,to then creating the base for the beads to sit in & finally sewing all the garlands of material..So you see, this isn't just a necklace with a bunch of green beads, but a time consuming 'work of art' that literally took time to make!
Unfortunately however, this art has somewhat dwindled down from what it use to be,since it is a VERY time consuming technique & artists just aren't getting the balance between time & the money for all their time, passion & efforts,as in the past.

    THE NECKLACE:
Being from Oaxaca,Federico was one of the influential factors that helped to bring Oaxaca jewelry to a much wider international platform.. It is now known to a vast & more culturally sophisticated audience, where this art form is being worn by the most chic &  fashionable! It's very obvious that only a "master" filigree artist made this, when you look at the perfectly formed circular wire patterns that are seriously precise! This is a art in itself to do,since the form would not be so rounded & perfect,if a little mathematical thinking & expertise, wasn't used..
Called "ELJARDIN" (The Garden),this is one of Oaxaca's 5 most popularly made designs that's known for the "Bow" in the design & is the most elaborate out of the 5 & are also the closest in style that came out of the 18th century.. This style is also very intricate in workmanship.
It's made in a link/panel lay out that has 2 Jardin designs per side, along with 4 round panels that end in the round closure that then dictate it's 22" length.
The green turquoise(dyed) garlands/beads are all hand sewn into a hand made base (see photo 11) & are outlined with shimmery 'diamond cut' wire. From the large circular center panel is a large El Jardin centerpiece drop that says it all..Knowing the time involved in a piece like this,my guess is this took around a month to make!(give or take)
This is as traditional Oaxaca as you can get & surprisingly, you can wear this with your Oaxaca/Chiapas embroidered clothing,to your sharpest urban outfit!
*****Please Note: With filigree, you are not paying for the weight of the silver nor the materials, but rather the time!!*****
